During the Edo Period, distinctive territories sprang up all over Japan.
The Ninja were integral to the flourishing of their own regions, as they gathered information about others. They used their special skills to execute the covert actions they were ordered to perform. They used their unique martial arts not so much for combat, but more for evasion, and became masters of the art of concealment.

Oiran were women who mastered traditional Japanese arts, such as poetry composition and the tea ceremony. Only a small number of high ranking samurai and rich men could share their company. The common people could only spy oiran accompanied by crowds of servants when they were out and about. The townspeople admired these spectacular public displays with wonder, and before long courtesan processions became a cultural event. This fascinating and enchanting parade through the entertainment district provides a glimpse of Edo's exotic customs.
